This category covers products sold to support the teeth, gums and breath from the inside, rather than the toothpastes and mouthwashes found in every pharmacy. The most common are oral probiotics, usually chewable tablets or lozenges that contain bacterial strains meant to settle in the mouth. Others are capsules or powders with vitamins, minerals and plant extracts marketed for gum health, fresher breath or stronger enamel.
How to read dental claims
Some sales pages in this space make dramatic promises: reversing tooth decay, regrowing receding gums or making dental visits unnecessary. Such statements come from the seller, so we check them against what dental research and a dentist can say. Gum tissue that has receded does not grow back on its own, and an established cavity needs a dentist.
The research behind these products is still early. Some oral probiotic strains have been tested in small studies for gum inflammation and bad breath, with mixed results. Studies of finished commercial formulas are uncommon, and a result for one strain does not carry over to a different one.
Checks before you order
Check that the label names each probiotic strain in full and gives a count of live organisms, or a dose for each vitamin and plant extract. A proprietary blend tells you very little.
Most oral health supplements are low risk for healthy adults, but people with a weakened immune system or a serious illness should check with a doctor before taking probiotics. Pregnant or breastfeeding women and anyone on regular medicines should ask a pharmacist first. Chewables with sugar or acidic flavourings can work against your teeth if used many times a day.
Look closely at the money side too: the refund window, whether opened packs qualify, return shipping costs and which company bills you.
When to see a dentist or doctor
Gums that bleed regularly, teeth that feel loose, swelling in the face or gums, toothache, or bad breath that will not go away should be checked by a dentist. A mouth ulcer or patch that has not healed within a few weeks also needs a professional look. Whatever you buy, it sits alongside brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, cleaning between the teeth and regular check-ups, not in place of them.
Behind our reviews
We read each seller’s pages, the terms and conditions and the published research. We are not paid for reviews.
