What is Eastern astrology?

Eastern astrology, often called Chinese astrology, is a system of symbols that has been part of East Asian culture for many centuries. Instead of the sun sign you may know from newspaper horoscopes, it starts with your birth year and places you in a repeating cycle of twelve animals. Layered on top are five elements, the balance of yin and yang, and a more detailed method called BaZi.

People enjoy it as a cultural tradition, a conversation starter and a gentle prompt for self-reflection. It is practiced for entertainment and personal reflection, and it carries a lot of beautiful symbolism. That is exactly why it makes such good reading.

The lunar calendar and why it matters

The Chinese calendar is lunisolar: its months follow the moon, and an extra month is added now and then to keep it in step with the seasons. The new year begins at Lunar New Year, which falls between roughly late January and mid February.

That is the one detail worth remembering. A birthday in January or early February may belong to the previous animal. Check the date of Lunar New Year in your birth year before you decide which animal is yours.

The 12 animals

The animals always follow the same order: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, Pig. A new animal arrives each year, and the cycle repeats every twelve years. Here are recent birth years, with the qualities traditionally associated with each animal.

AnimalRecent birth yearsTraditionally described as
Rat1996, 2008, 2020Resourceful, quick-witted
Ox1997, 2009, 2021Steady, dependable
Tiger1998, 2010, 2022Bold, courageous
Rabbit1999, 2011, 2023Gentle, gracious
Dragon2000, 2012, 2024Confident, charismatic
Snake2001, 2013, 2025Wise, intuitive
Horse2002, 2014, 2026Energetic, free-spirited
Goat2003, 2015, 2027Creative, kind
Monkey2004, 2016, 2028Clever, playful
Rooster2005, 2017, 2029Observant, hardworking
Dog2006, 2018, 2030Loyal, honest
Pig2007, 2019, 2031Generous, easygoing

Remember the Lunar New Year caveat when you look up your year. These are traditional descriptions, offered for fun, and no animal is better than another.

Eastern astrology animal cycle: the 12 zodiac animals with recent birth years

The five elements

The five elements, Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water, describe qualities and processes rather than physical materials. Wood stands for growth, Fire for warmth and energy, Earth for steadiness, Metal for clarity and structure, and Water for flow and depth.

They also work together in two classic cycles. In the generating cycle, Wood feeds Fire, Fire creates Earth, Earth bears Metal, Metal collects Water and Water nourishes Wood. In the controlling cycle, Water dampens Fire, Fire melts Metal, Metal cuts Wood, Wood holds Earth and Earth contains Water.

A quick way to find the element of your birth year is to look at its last digit:

Last digitElement
0 or 1Metal
2 or 3Water
4 or 5Wood
6 or 7Fire
8 or 9Earth

So someone born in 1988 is an Earth Dragon, and someone born in 2000 is a Metal Dragon. Because elements move in a two-year rhythm, the same animal returns every twelve years with a different element, and the full animal-and-element combination only repeats every 60 years.

Yin and yang

Every year in the cycle is either yin or yang, softer or more active in tradition, and the polarity alternates from one year to the next. A handy rule: years ending in an even digit are traditionally yang, and years ending in an odd digit are yin. Together with the elements, it adds the nuance that makes a Wood Tiger read differently from a Fire Tiger, and a yin year differ from a yang year.

BaZi in brief: the four pillars

For a more detailed picture, traditional practitioners use BaZi, which means “eight characters.” It builds a chart from four pillars: the year, month, day and hour of birth. Each pillar has two characters, a heavenly stem and an earthly branch, which gives eight in all. The stems link to the five elements and carry a yin or yang polarity, and the branches are the twelve animals.

The day pillar is traditionally seen as the heart of the chart, while the year pillar is where your familiar animal sits. Writing out and interpreting those pillars by hand takes practice, and that is why many people prefer a ready-made report.

Making Eastern astrology part of your year

You do not need to be an expert to enjoy this tradition. Try swapping animals with a friend, noting the elements of the people you love or marking Lunar New Year on your calendar as a moment to set intentions. A personalized reading simply gives you a richer story to read, share and think about.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Chinese and Eastern astrology?

In everyday use the two terms usually mean the same thing: the tradition that grew out of the Chinese lunisolar calendar, with its twelve animals, five elements and yin and yang. Some people say Eastern to include neighboring cultures that share parts of the system.

How do I find my animal?

Look up your birth year in the animal cycle. If you were born in January or early February, check the date of Lunar New Year that year, because your animal may be the one before.

How do I find my element?

A simple rule uses the last digit of your birth year: 0 and 1 are Metal, 2 and 3 are Water, 4 and 5 are Wood, 6 and 7 are Fire, and 8 and 9 are Earth. The same lunar-year caveat applies.

Do I need my birth time?

The traditional four-pillar method uses the hour of birth, but your animal and element need only your birth date. The quiz asks for your date of birth and not your birth time.

Is a personalized reading worth it?

If you enjoy the tradition, yes. A personalized report takes everything above and applies it to you, in one place. The Eastern Astrology Language Reading starts at $19, and a 60-day money-back guarantee applies under the seller's Terms and the ClickBank checkout.

Is the quiz private, and can I avoid emails?

The quiz asks for your first name, email and date of birth. The marketing email box is ticked by default, so untick it if you want only your reading.

Can I enjoy it if I am new to astrology?

Absolutely. Eastern astrology is welcoming for beginners because you can start with a single animal and a single element, then go deeper whenever you like.
