Want to know your Chinese zodiac animal and element right now? Good news: an Eastern astrology birth chart calculator can be as simple as one table and one rule about the last digit of your birth year, and the Eastern Astrology Language Reading picks up where that leaves off. This page gives you the method step by step, with worked examples, and then shows how to turn those basics into a full personalized chart if you would like to go further.

Eastern astrology birth chart calculator: the do-it-yourself way
Follow four quick steps. You need only your birth date.
Step 1: Check the Lunar New Year. The Chinese year does not start on January 1. Look up the Lunar New Year date for your birth year in the table below. If your birthday falls before it, use the previous year in the steps that follow.
Step 2: Find your animal. Match the year to the animal, or subtract 4 from the year and divide by 12. The remainder gives the animal in the standard order: 0 Rat, 1 Ox, 2 Tiger, 3 Rabbit, 4 Dragon, 5 Snake, 6 Horse, 7 Goat, 8 Monkey, 9 Rooster, 10 Dog, 11 Pig.
Step 3: Find your element. Use the last digit of that year.
| Last digit | Element |
|---|---|
| 0 or 1 | Metal |
| 2 or 3 | Water |
| 4 or 5 | Wood |
| 6 or 7 | Fire |
| 8 or 9 | Earth |
Step 4: Add yin or yang. An even last digit is yang. An odd one is yin.

For earlier years, add or subtract 12 for the animal and 10 for the element, or simply use the last-digit rule. Some BaZi practitioners switch years at the start of spring, around February 4, instead of Lunar New Year, so you may see a second answer for birthdays in that window. For the zodiac animal, Lunar New Year is the usual rule.
Worked examples
- Born March 12, 1990. The Lunar New Year was January 27, 1990, so the year is 1990. The last digit is 0, which gives Metal. 1990 is a Horse year. You are a yang Metal Horse.
- Born January 15, 2000. Lunar New Year 2000 was February 5, so you still belong to 1999. The last digit 9 gives Earth, and 1999 is a Rabbit year. You are a yin Earth Rabbit.
- Born September 3, 2011. The last digit 1 gives Metal, and 2011 is a Rabbit year. You are a yin Metal Rabbit.

What the do-it-yourself method gives you, and what it leaves out
A quick calculation gives you a real piece of your chart: the year pillar, with its animal, element and yin or yang nature. It is a lovely way to start a conversation at a family dinner.
A complete Eastern birth chart has more going on. Traditionally it has four pillars, one each for year, month, day and hour, and each pillar pairs a heavenly stem with an earthly branch. The month pillar follows solar terms rather than calendar months, and the day pillar needs a conversion table, so the other three pillars are tedious to work out by hand. Our guide to the Eastern chart layout explains how the four pillars fit together, and our birth chart overview covers which birth details matter.

Frequently asked questions
How do I find my Chinese zodiac animal from my birth year?
Use the table on this page for 1996 to 2026, or subtract 4 from your birth year and divide by 12. The remainder tells you the animal: 0 is Rat, 1 Ox, 2 Tiger, 3 Rabbit, 4 Dragon, 5 Snake, 6 Horse, 7 Goat, 8 Monkey, 9 Rooster, 10 Dog and 11 Pig.
How do I find my element?
Look at the last digit of your birth year. 0 or 1 is Metal, 2 or 3 is Water, 4 or 5 is Wood, 6 or 7 is Fire, and 8 or 9 is Earth. Remember to use the previous year if your birthday falls before that year's Lunar New Year.
Why does my birthday in January give a different animal?
The Chinese year starts at Lunar New Year, which lands between late January and mid February. A birthday before that date counts toward the previous year's animal and element.
Is this a full birth chart?
It gives you your year pillar, which covers your animal, element and yin or yang nature. A full chart adds the month, day and hour pillars, and that part is easiest with a personalized reading.
Is the quiz a free calculator?
It is a short quiz of about 60 seconds that asks for your first name, email and date of birth. Your reading and the offer appear after it, so think of it as the doorway to a personalized chart.
What happens to my email?
The quiz has a marketing box. If you only want your reading, you can untick it before you continue.
Do I need my birth hour?
No. A birth hour is a traditional extra, but the quiz starts with only your date of birth, so you can try it right away.
Is it worth trying if I am unsure?
Yes. The paid reading comes with a 60-day money-back guarantee, so you can read your chart in full and ask for a refund if it is not for you.
