Most people have no idea about what a health insurance is. Several people would sarcastically say that it's "insuring your health." They may be right, but there are more to health insurance than changing the word insurance into a verb. There are basically two entities that service individuals: private health insurance programs and government-funded health coverage programs.
Private health insurance is provided through an individual's employer. When you're part of a company, you are automatically given health care benefits. However, since your health coverage is job-based, your employer chooses the plan options that you will be provided with. Therefore, you really have no control over how minimal or great your privileges are. Then again, your employer could also let you choose the plan that will apply to you. But if you are not employed and is married to someone who is, you are also entitled to the same benefits. Aside from job-based coverage, one can have private health insurance through individual policies, association health plans, and consumer driven health plans.
As for the government-funded health coverage, there's Medicare and Medicaid. Going into the details, Medicare is a federal government entitlement program that renders medical coverage to individuals who are 65 years old and older. People with disabilities that keep them from finding a job are also eligible. Medicare offers four packages or options that have differing benefits. Other parts will require an individual to pay a certain fee while the Part A, or the original Medicare assistance, is free.
Funded by federal and state governments, Medicaid is focused on providing health care assistance to the low-income population. Of course, not everyone is eligible for Medicaid, with the applicant's age and whether he/she is pregnant, blind, or disabled, as well as his/her income, as factors they consider for Medicaid.
There's more to health insurances than these, but the rest is up to you to research and learn. Health care is pertinent to daily life so before you sign up for one, better get your facts straight.
